AMI
6
The AMI 6 was the model introduced to
fill the gap between the 2CV and DS, it offered a somewhat plush
interior and sedan styling but had similar chassis and drive train as
the 2CV, as other models, it acquired some added power and features
during its production, it was also offered in a Break (wagon), later
models were AMI 8 and AMI Super.
More detailed information about these cars can be found through the Links page.
Got this car in L. A. from
a lady that had it since new in 1965 but had sat unused in their garage
for about 18 years, the original intention was to use it as parts car
for the AK 350 since the mechanical components are the same, but it was
too good for that, it could have easily been made into a daily driver,
my friend Jeroen Cats liked it as it was the U. S. specification model,
so it was taken up to Montana for restoration and was to be sent to him
when finished, with his unfortunate and untimely accident he will not
see it done, but the work will continue in his memory.

Started the project in
summer of 03, it was completely dismantled and pressure washed, the
chassis was in good shape so it was sand blasted, rust inhibitor
applied and painted.

The only rust was the lower
toe board, it was easier to make repair sections than replacing, cut
out
the rusted metal and treated the remaining with rust inhibitor inside
the double wall section as well as the outside, the outer section was
simple as it only has one bend, for the inner piece used the bead
roller to duplicate the corrugation, these were plug welded in place.
Some repair was also made on the battery tray, other minor surface rust
areas were treated with converter and inhibitor.

There were some dents on
fenders which was poorly fixed by abundant use of Bondo, after
removing the filler the dents was repaired properly. after sanding and
prepping the primer and paint wad applied, The paint was original color
AC 102, I am not too happy with results, Enamel was sent instead of
Urethane and there is a bit of orange peel effect, I reordered the
right paint and will sand down and respray it later.

The engine and transmission was checked and after cleaning the heads
compression was up to specifications, installed new seals and fresh
fluids. All shrouds and inner fenders were cleaned and repainted. The
bearing on a front wheel had gone bad and damaged the hub, fortunately
I found a large spline hub and replaced it along with new bearings on
both front wheels.
The body and drive line are now mounted on the chassis and after the
paint the rest can be assembled, new door panels are ready and the
dash is repaired and covered with new vinyl, have the padding and
carpet material on hand also.
