CX
The CX introduced as replacement for
DS, body styling even though advanced was more conventional than that
of DS, it had a transverse mounted 4 cylinder engine and transaxle, had
the hydraulic suspension, power brakes and self centering power
steering.
Models consisted of Palls, Prestige that was 9.5" longer, GTI and
Safari (wagon), gas engines of 2347 CC and diesel 2500 CC that was
available on Pallas and Safari. The earlier years were designated
Series 1, later Series 2 have some trim and option variations.
CX was not officially imported to U. S. but some diesels were brought
in by importers since it was exempt from EPA but had to be compliant
with DOT regulations, later gas models were imported by CXA and CNA.
This CX is 1980 Series 1 diesel, A
friend had it for some years and I traded a restored Mehari for it, it
has been in California and there is no rust and is mechanically in very
good condition, common to this model the molded door panels were warped
and cracked, with no replacement available and no good way to repair, I
made my own and it turned out reasonably well, also was able to find
original headlights and replace the ugly sealed beams, will be
replacing the somewhat sagged headliner soon and will eventually give
it a new coat of paint.

It was setting unused in L. A. for three years, last winter while there
I got it started and noticed a hydraulic leak which was traced to
steering rack, all was well after replacement and I hauled it up to
Montana in april on a car dolly, many CX people said it should not be
done as the suspension will go flat in a few minutes, however it held
up for hours and only started about five times to raise in 1500 mile
trip. Have been using it almost daily in past few weeks and enjoying it.
